Hello, fellow travel lovers! I’m Sonali, and I’m thrilled to share my passion for Sri Lanka with you. I live in
the beautiful city of Kandy and study Tourism and Hospitality Management. Traveling and discovering
new places are my true loves, and I can’t wait to tell you about the amazing spots in my country.
Sri Lanka is truly a gem, filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming people. From
ancient cities to stunning beaches and lush mountains, there’s something for everyone here. In this blog, I’ll
start from my hometown, Kandy, and take you on a journey to some of the most special places around the
island. Whether you’re dreaming about your next trip or just want to learn more about Sri Lanka, I hope this
guide inspires you to explore its hidden treasures!
Kandy The Jewel of Sri Lanka
Let’s begin with Kandy, my lovely hometown. Known as the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, Kandy is nestled in
the lush hills of the central part of the island, making it a peaceful escape from the busy city life. It’s a place
rich in history and culture, and you can feel it in every corner. Whether it’s the sound of temple bells or the
sight of traditional dancers, Kandy is a city that truly captures the spirit of Sri Lanka.
Walking through the streets of Kandy, you’ll notice how the old blends seamlessly with the new. Traditional
markets buzz with activity alongside modern shops and cafes. It’s a vibrant city where every day feels like a
celebration of Sri Lankan culture.
Must-See Spots in Kandy
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
This temple is one of the most important places for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. It houses a sacred tooth relic of
the Buddha, making it a deeply spiritual place. But even if you’re not religious, the temple is worth visiting
for its beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere. Walking through its halls, you can sense the deep
history and spirituality that make this place so special.
Kandy Lake
Right in the center of the city, this beautiful man-made lake is perfect for a relaxing stroll. It was built in
1807 by the last king of Sri Lanka, and today it’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. As you walk
around the lake, you can watch the sunset and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It’s a wonderful place to
unwind and see the everyday life of Kandy unfold.
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
A short drive from Kandy, these gardens are a paradise for nature lovers. They are famous for their huge
collection of orchids, but there are so many other plants and trees to see as well. It’s a perfect place for a
relaxing walk among tall trees and colorful flowers, and you might even spot a few monkeys swinging
through the branches!
Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue
For the best views of Kandy, head to this giant Buddha statue that sits atop a hill overlooking the city. The
climb up might be a bit steep, but the panoramic view is absolutely worth it, especially at sunset when the
city glows with a golden light. It’s a peaceful spot to sit and reflect, taking in the beauty of Kandy from
above.
Exploring Beyond Kandy
Once you’ve experienced the magic of Kandy, there are many more wonders to explore just a short journey
away. Sri Lanka is a small island, but it’s packed with diverse landscapes and experiences that will leave
you amazed.
Knuckles Mountain Range
Not far from Kandy, this mountain range is perfect for those who love hiking and nature. It’s
named for its resemblance to a clenched fist, and it’s full of beautiful trails, waterfalls, and stunning
views. As you hike through the dense forests and misty peaks, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into
another world. It’s an adventure that’s perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
This ancient rock fortress is one of the most famous landmarks in Sri Lanka. The massive rock
rises nearly 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, and the climb to the top is a bit challenging.
But don’t let that stop you! Along the way, you’ll see ancient frescoes and stunning views that make
every step worth it. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the
lush countryside below.
Ella
If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy some stunning scenery, Ella is the perfect spot. This
small town is famous for its scenic train ride from Kandy, which winds through lush tea plantations
and misty mountains. Once you arrive, there are plenty of hikes and viewpoints to explore, like the
famous Nine Arches Bridge and Ella Rock. Or, if you prefer to take it easy, just find a cozy spot to
enjoy a cup of local tea and soak in the laid-back vibe.
Traveling Responsibly
As we explore these wonderful places, let’s remember to travel responsibly. It’s important to respect the local
culture, support local businesses, and take care of the environment so that we can keep these places beautiful
for everyone. Simple things like reducing waste, being mindful of wildlife, and choosing eco-friendly
options can make a big difference.
